Legislative Branch:
The Legislative Branch of WSGA is the Student Senate. The purpose of the Senate is to represent the views and ideas of the over 8,000 students that make up Washburn University. The Student Senate performs tasks ranging from confirming Executive appointments to passing Student Government Laws and Resolutions, as well as allocating student fees each year, and working closely with student organization.
The Senate is composed of 32 senators, each serving a one-year term. 27 of the senate seats are elected in general elections each spring. Five seats are set aside in the Fall for potential freshman senators who are elected early in the semester.
The Student Senate meets every other Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Kansas Room (Second Floor Memorial Union). On Wednesday in which there are no general meetings committee meetings are held. All meetings are open to the public. Students are encouraged to attend and may speak during public forum. This is specifically designed as an open forum for students to address the senators who represent them.
